Class Preparation:
What you need:
·
A 3 ring binder
or 3 subject spiral notebook with pockets (I give a lot of handouts and you’ll
take a lot of notes)
·
Dividers
(vocabulary, class notes) and filler paper (if you go with a binder)
·
Pencils AND pens
Every day you will have a pen/pencil, paper for notes, the book we are working with, and homework (when applicable).
There will be a notebook check EACH MARKING PERIOD for a test grade, so make sure you stay organized!
Cell phones/Personal audio devices: Are not permitted in class and will be confiscated (unless being used for class WITH permission). If a phone rings/vibrates during a test or quiz, you will receive a zero on that assessment.
Food/Drink: Not allowed in class – no excuses… leave them in your locker or bag or they become mine. *Water is permitted only if reasonable size and in a sealed container.
Appropriate attire: Clothing and shoes worn must adhere to the school guidelines or you may be asked to go change.
Inappropriate behavior: May result in warning, personal discussion, teacher’s detention, parental contact, and/or removal from the classroom.
LATENESS: Not being in one’s seat at the time of the bell and prepared for class (with requisite materials) is late. Lateness is rude, disruptive and unacceptable. Tardiness will result in administrative action as detailed in the school policy.
Homework:
Assignments will include reading passages at home, handouts that apply to our reading and vocabulary exercises.
HOMEWORK is due THE DAY AND PERIOD it is due – with the internet and weekly plans, YOU are responsible for getting work done on time unless there are specific extenuating circumstances. I am available both before and after school as needed if you require assistance with any of the questions.
Homework will be graded as O (completed entirely), ½ (mostly done), or 0 (less than half/not completed) and will count as one test grade at the end of the quarter. If you have 100% homework completion, you will receive one extra point on your average. If there are answers you’re unsure of, do your best but star (*) them.
Assignments:
Assignments are anything that is not homework/study guide and is handed in. This includes all papers, poems, bonus assignments, etc.
ALL MUST BE TYPED in order to be accepted with a heading (Your name, my name-period, assignment) and suitable title if needed. Make SURE that paragraph and line spacing are set PROPERLY based on directions!!

If the library is closed in the morning, you may use my printer BEFORE SCHOOL if you ASK FIRST. The library is often closed or being used by classes, so PLAN AHEAD!
DUE DATES ARE DUE DATES – assignments are due at the onset of class (already printed) or they are considered LATE (one grade lower). Assignments not submitted by day end will NOT be accepted!
If you are absent from class on a known due date – you MUST email your submission to me by 3 pm or your work will not be accepted in print form upon your return. Given this is done, print your work for class the day you return.
Absences:
If you are absent from class, you are still responsible for what you missed. If you have missed notes, get them from someone in class or from my website. The 17th absence will result in removal from this course.
If you know about a test/quiz, you are required to take it unless you have missed information that will appear on the assessment. Review sheets can be found on the website in the Student Downloads link and appropriate folder.
If you are not present on the day of a known test or quiz, you must take it the day you return to school or the following morning before school at 7:15.
If you miss a vocabulary quiz, you are required to write one ORIGINAL sentence for each of the applicable words (DO NOT TYPE THIS).
In the case of a prolonged absence or extenuating circumstances, please speak with me.
In the case that you are absent on a known due date, the material must reach me via email or other means by 3:00 that day – so make sure that you have a plan in place.
When/if you are absent for more than two days of class, you must have someone pick up your work and bring it to you or email me for it so that you are not lost when you return.
If you choose to cut class, your class participation will be decreased which will affect your final grade for the quarter. If you cut on a test/due date, you will not be permitted to complete the work.
Plagiarism & Academic Dishonesty
During tests/quizzes – any sign of cheating, including cell phones during exams, will result in a zero for any parties involved.
Any short term assignments – poems, scenes, vocabulary make ups – will result in THREE zeroes for the assignment instead of one.
All long term assignments submitted (outside reading, essays, parts of essays, etc) are MAJOR assignments and if shown to be the work of another will result in a minimum of THREE times the zeroes for the assignment and a maximum of a zero for the marking period (most likely a failure for the year).
Grades:
Each quarter grade will be based on a number of factors including:
·
homework
·
weekly
vocabulary quizzes
·
literature
tests
·
outside/summer
reading scores
·
bonus
assignments
·
class
participation
Class Participation: This includes lateness, attitude, additions to discussions, and attendance to extra help and can add or subtract up to three points on your final grade.
Key Traits Expected in Students:
INTEGRITY: the quality of possessing and steadfastly adhering to high moral principles or professional standards
This applies to all work being your work
and all work meeting both your and my high standards.
RESPONSIBILITY: the state, fact, or position of being accountable to somebody or for something
This means understanding that your
success in this class and all your endeavors is YOUR job to ensure. You must make sure all work meets established
deadlines and standards and that you seek assistance from your team or me as
needed BEFORE it becomes too late.
Asking for help may be the best way to learn!
RESPECT: to show consideration or thoughtfulness in relation to somebody or something
In order for this class to work both
individually and as a unit, we must agree to be considerate of the feelings and
positions of others although we may disagree with them. Also, this applies to the texts we study as
we work with them for a reason which I will gladly share with you if you see me
after school instead of saying “this sucks”, etc. Finally, this means working
for/with your teams as best you can and not being disruptive to the class by
being late, inappropriate or contributing media interference.
